Crucified with Christ
"I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. " Galatians 2:20
Seek Him with all Thy Heart
"But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul." Deuteronomy 4:29
The Imitation of Christ
Heart faith cannot deny truth nor will it act contray to truth. This true faith of the heart will act, it is never idle, it always moves in the direction of holiness and obedience to the truth, it imitates Christ. "He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked." (I John 2:6)
If Any Man Will Come After Me
"Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works." Matthew 16:24-27
The Sum of the Gospel
"He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life." I John 5:12 This is the sum and epitome of the whole record given us by all the six witnesses. That God hath given to us eternal life.
Standing in the Light
The other day my wife and I were talking, I was standing in front of the living room window, she was directly across from me. The light coming through the window was so bright that it blinded her and she said, "I can't see you, your standing directly in the light." I immediately thought of how true this is in the spirit realm.
Run That Ye May Obtain
"Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain." I Corinthians 9:24 "But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course..." Acts 20:24
Love Thy Neighbour
"...Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." Matthew 22:37-40
The Mystery of Faith
Open your Bible to the very first book and read the very first verse, it reads, "In the beginning God created the Heaven and the earth." Now to the carnal man this is ludicrous. How can a man grasp the improbability of such an impossible task as to create the heaven and earth, and do it all out of nothing? Herein lies the mystery of Faith.
God Is Not Mocked
"Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting." Galatians 6:7-8
The Greatest Sermon Ever Preached
"And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying," Matthew 5:1-2 Following these words is without question the greatest sermon ever preached to men. As Peter said, "According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness..." II Peter 1:3. Jesus gave us all of this and more.
The Holy One
The first lesson in holiness is that God and God alone is holy. No amount of effort on our part, no amount of sacrifice, no amount of works on our part will even scratch the surface of true holiness. I've seen men go to great lengths to convince others just how holy they are. Fact is, those who profess to be holy in this way have the least amount of holiness of all as genuine holiness bears with it the mark of deep humility.
Effectual Fervent Prayer
"The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much" James 5:16. The true born-again life is not for the faint hearted, nor the spiritual sluggard. Every line of scripture breathes with a violent spiritual assault against darkness, a militant pressing into the kingdom of God, and prevailing prayer through great travail. Jesus said Himself that the "...violent take it by force" Matthew 11:12.
Dividing and Discerning
"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." Hebrews 4:12
Fight the Good Fight
The apostle suggests to Timothy, that he had other business to do than to mind the things of this world; his life was a state of warfare; he was a soldier, and was not to entangle himself with the things of this life; he had many enemies to engage with, as Satan, the lusts of the flesh; the world; as also false teachers, with, whom particularly he was to fight the good fight of faith, that so the truth of the Gospel, which they resisted, might continue with the saints.
My heart breaks as I write these words, because men and women who have known and served the Living God are being caught up with this strange abstract "god". Jesus said the reason is, "because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold."
The only knowledge that is profitable to man, is the knowledge of God. Through this knowledge alone do we live and have life eternal. "According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust" 2 Peter 1:3-4.
Are We Sanctified?
Sanctification is that inward spiritual work which the Lord Jesus Christ works in a man by the Holy Ghost when He calls him to be a true believer, separates him from his natural love of sin and the world, puts a new principle in his heart, and makes him practically godly in life.
On Whom the Image of God is Renewed
"My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God." Proverbs 2:1-5
The Whole Armour of God
"Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit..." Ephesians 6:14-18
The Hope of Glory
"To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus." Colossians 1:27-28
The Church, the Body of Christ
"He is the head of the body, the church..." Colossians 1:18 "Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ." I Peter 2:5
Enter into the Holiest
"Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;" Hebrews 10:19-20 The sacrificial work of Jesus made it possible for the child of God to enter into the holiest. But have you ever really thought about an entrance into that most holy place, standing before the God of all the universe?
"Christ is in You... Your Only Hope"
Christ in you, the sum and finality of all hope. But do we truly understand what this means to us? Do we truly understand what it means for Christ "not" to be in us? Paul sums it up in II Corinthians 13:5, "Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?"
Ye Are The Temple!
"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are." I Corinthians 3:16-17 The whole man is the temple; the soul is the inner most holy of holies; the understanding and heart, the holy place; and the body, the porch and exterior of the temple grounds.
The Heart of Christianity
"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." Hebrews 4:12 Few scripture reveal the true power of God's Word like this. So powerful is His Word, that it divides the soulish man from the spiritual. With a Word from God, the joints are separated from the marrow, and by a mere whisper, God reveals the thoughts and intents of mans heart.
To This Man Will I Look
"Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? For all those things hath mine hand made, and those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word." Isaiah 66:1-2
Without Shedding of Blood
Some impurities might be removed by water and fire, but the stain of "sin" could be removed only by blood. This declaration referred in its primary meaning, to the Jewish rites, and the sense is, that under that dispensation it was universally true that in order to the forgiveness of sin blood must be shed. But it contains a truth of higher order and importance still. "It is universally true that sin never has been, and never will be forgiven, except in connection with, and in virtue of the shedding of blood."
If Not, Be It Known
"Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter. If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up." Daniel 3:16-18
"And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light." Romans 13:11-12
Separation Unto God
The essence however, is not so much a separation FROM the world, as it is a separation UNTO God. One is a matter of struggle, the other a matter of yielding. Scripture says, "...yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness ...yield yourselves unto God" Romans 6:19,13.
Walk in the Spirit
"This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would." Galatians 5:16-17
God's Law of Revival
"Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle." Exodus 40:34 Much of the Christian world rushes to anything that calls itself a revival today without even opening their Bible to see if it has the slightest resemblance of God's word. These modern revivals reek of flesh and have nothing to do with the living God, nor is God anywhere near their foolishness.
If Thine Eye Be Single
"The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!" Matthew 6:22,23
Fear - Faith's Great Hindrance
"Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." II Timothy 1:6-7
Joshua and the End Time Christian
"And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? And the captain of the LORD's host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so." Joshua 5:13-15
Then Shalt Thou Understand
"My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD..." Proverbs 2:1-9
Simeon - and the End Time Church
"And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came by the Spirit into the temple..." Luke 2:25-35
Christ - The Power and Wisdom of God
Those who are called and sanctified, who receive the gospel, and are enlightened by the Spirit of God, discern more glorious discoveries of God's wisdom and power in the doctrine of Christ crucified than in all his other works. "...Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God." 1 Corinthians 1:24
But for the Grace of God
"...by the grace of God I am what I am..." 1 Corinthians 15:10 To speak more properly, it is not I, but the grace of God that is with me - This it is which at first qualified me for the work, and still excites me to zeal and diligence in it. "So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. Romans 9:16
"These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren." Proverbs 6:16-19
The Preparation of the Gospel
"Prepared with the gospel of peace. The sense is, that the Christian soldier is to be prepared with the gospel of peace to meet attacks similar to those against which the ancient soldier designed to guard himself by the sandals or greaves which he wore. The word rendered "preparation" means properly readiness, fitness for, alacrity."
The Word Of God
"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." Hebrews 4:12
He Restrained Them Not
"For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not. " I Samual 3:13 Eli was judged of God because he not only knew of his son's corruption, but did nothing to stop it. And though their corruption was an abomination before God, Eli did not remove his son's from the priesthood.
This is the Love of God
"For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous." 1 John 5:3 It is vain to pretend love to God while we live in opposition to his will. Self-denial is required, but true Christians have a principle which carries them above all hinderances.
Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God
You have greater and better things to take thought about, the life of your soul, your eternal happiness; that is the one thing needful (Luk_10:42), about which you should employ your thoughts, and which is commonly neglected in those hearts wherein worldly cares have the ascendant. If we were but more careful to please God, and to work out our own salvation, we should be less solicitous to please ourselves, and work out an estate in the world.
"...all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28 "Every providence tends to the spiritual good of those that love God; in breaking them off from sin, bringing them nearer to God, weaning them from the world, and fitting them for heaven. When the saints act out of character, corrections will be employed to bring them back again."
Chosen to Salvation
By A. W. Pink
"But we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth." 2 Thessalonians 2:13
There are three things here which deserve special attention. First, the fact that we are expressly told that God's elect are "chosen to salvation": Language could not be more explicit. How summarily do these words dispose of the sophistries and equivocations of all who would make election refer to nothing but external privileges or rank in service! It is to "salvation" itself that God has chosen us.
Second, we are warned here that election unto salvation does not disregard the use of appropriate means: salvation is reached through "sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth" It is not true that because God has chosen a certain one to salvation that he will be saved willy-nilly, whether he believes or not: nowhere do the Scriptures so represent it. The same God who "chose unto salvation", decreed that His purpose should be realized through the work of the spirit and belief of the truth.
Third, that God has chosen us unto salvation is a profound cause for fervent praise. Note how strongly the apostle express this - "we are bound to give thanks always to God for you. brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation", etc. Instead of shrinking back in horror from the doctrine of predestination, the believer, when he sees this blessed truth as it is unfolded in the Word, discovers a ground for gratitude and thanksgiving such as nothing else affords, save the unspeakable gift of the Redeemer Himself.
